In a recent legal development, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg has threatened to hold the Trump administration in contempt of court for violating an order to halt deportation flights to El Salvador.

The flights, which carried over 200 individuals, were launched under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, a controversial law that the Trump administration invoked to bypass a judicial order.

The controversy over deportation flights

We are currently witnessing a conflict between the judiciary and the Trump administration. Judge Boasberg had previously issued a temporary restraining order to halt the deportation flights; however, that did not stop Trump's administration and the deportation flights have continued.

While the Supreme Court later ruled that the president could continue to use the 1798 Alien Enemies Act for the deportations, Boasberg states that the administration ignored his initial ruling.

Trump's administration deadline

The judge has given until April 23 for the administration to provide an explanation for their actions. If they fail to meet the deadline, Boasberg has warned that he could move forward with contempt proceedings.

Boasberg also stated that he was considering the possibility of identifying and prosecuting those who were responsible for disregarding the court's ruling.
