Deported without charges and detained in a notorious mega-prison, Kilmar Abrego García’s case is shaking U.S.-El Salvador relations. As calls for justice grow louder, a U.S. senator steps into the fray, turning this wrongful deportation into a flashpoint for human rights and immigration reform.

Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland traveled to El Salvador to demand the release of Kilmar Abrego García, a Maryland resident who was wrongfully deported in March 2025. His removal occurred despite a federal judge's explicit order blocking the deportation. Abrego, who had been living legally in the U.S. for over 15 years, was in the middle of seeking asylum. The case sparked outrage among immigration advocates. Van Hollen called the incident a serious breach of legal protections and due process.

Abrego detained in El Salvador despite U.S. supreme court order for his return

After being deported, Abrego was sent to El Salvador’s high-security mega-prison, Cecot, designed for alleged gang members. He was detained without a warrant or formal charges, accused—without evidence—of gang affiliation. Cecot is notorious for its harsh conditions and isolation practices. Abrego’s family and lawyers fear for his physical and mental well-being. Despite legal efforts, Salvadoran authorities have refused to release him.

On April 10, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an emergency order demanding Abrego’s immediate return. Still, the federal government has not complied with the ruling. The presiding judge criticized U.S. immigration officials for violating court orders and demanded accountability. The case has ignited legal and political scrutiny. Pressure is mounting on the Biden administration to act swiftly and rectify the error.

Van Hollen seeks diplomatic intervention as Abrego’s wrongful detention fuels international tensions

While in El Salvador, Senator Van Hollen sought meetings with Salvadoran officials and U.S. embassy staff. He also requested access to visit Abrego in prison to assess his condition. President Nayib Bukele’s government has refused to release Abrego, labeling him a “terrorist” without presenting evidence. Human rights groups have condemned this stance. The case is straining diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Kilmar Abrego García’s ordeal underscores the dangers of increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement. It raises critical concerns about due process, judicial independence, and international human rights. Lawmakers are considering sending an official delegation to negotiate Abrego’s release. His case has become a powerful symbol in the fight against wrongful deportations. The Salvadoran-American community is demanding justice and his safe return to the U.S.
