The Trump administration is considering a $5,000 'baby bonus' to encourage more births in the U.S. amid declining birth rates, with proposals to support American families.

The Trump administration is exploring new ways to encourage Americans to have more children, with proposals including a $5,000 "baby bonus" for new mothers.
The initiative, aimed at reversing the U.S.'s declining birth rate, is gaining traction among policymakers, although it has not yet been finalized.

The White House is very concerned about the declining birth rate in the U.S. and thus, considering several potential policies designed to get people more excited over marriage and childbearing. One of them is the option to offer a financial incentive of $5,000 to each American mother after giving birth. Donald Trump even called it "a good idea" during a press conference.

Accordingly, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump’s priority are American families. "The president wants America to be a country where all children can safely grow up and achieve the American dream. As a mother myself, I am proud to work for a president who is taking significant action to leave a better country for the next generation," Leavitt said.
'Baby Bonus' proposal gets criticism
The "baby bonus" idea has certainly gained attention, but many advocates have criticized the idea. MomsRising CEO Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, is one of them, arguing that what families really need is continue support such as: affordable child care, paid family leave, and access to maternal health care.
For Rowe-Finkbeiner's organization, it's not just about financial incentives, but rather creating a family-friendly environment. According to her, that's the key to reversing birth rates.
Other proposals to support families
In addition to the "baby bonus" proposal, other potential policies are being considered, such as:
- Eliminating tax penalties for married couples
- Granting a "National Medal of Motherhood" to mothers with multiple children.
All of these ideas (and many more) are still under review by White House's Domestic Policy Council.
