Anthony Albanese re-elected as Prime Minister in 2025 Australian federal election
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wins a historic second term in the 2025 federal election, with the Labor Party securing a majority. Opposition leader Peter Dutton loses his seat amid voter backlash against Trump-style policies.

In a significant political development, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has secured a second consecutive term following the 2025 federal election held on May 3.
The Australian Labor Party (ALP) achieved a majority in the House of Representatives, marking a historic win and reinforcing public confidence in Albanese's leadership.
Labor Party reaches majority; Peter Dutton loses seat
Out of 150 seats, the ALP is expected to win 76 seats in the election for the House of Representatives, obtaining more than enough for a majority government.
The situation was very different from opposition leader Peter Dutton, who not only did lose the election, he also lost his own seat of Dickson to Labor candidate Ali France.
Australian voter's concerns: cost of living, housing, and U.S. relations
Anthony Albanese owes his victory to many factors, but specially the rising cost of living and housing affordability, as well as Australia's geopolitical relationship with the United States.
However, Dutton's campaign was a little too close to Donald Trump's' policies for comfort in Australia. This did not sit well with Americans, as a survey from Lowy Institute shows that they don't trust the U.S. to act responsibly.
