Pope Leo XIV: Trump congratulates Cardinal Robert Prevost as first American pope

In a historical event, Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new pope after the Conclave 2025. Prevost, now Leo XIV, is officially Pope Francis' successor and is ready to lead the Catholic Church. Much like Pope Francis made history as the first Argentinian pope, Pope Leo XIV has now become the first pope from the U.S.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, offered his congratulations to the new pontiff in a Truth Social post. Trump expressed his excitement over the significance for the United States to be part of history and called it "a great honor".

In a post on Truth Social, congratulated Leo XIV for being elected as a new pope. Trump acknowledged the fact of just how great of an honor it was to have someone from the United States as head of the Catholic Church.

President Trump ended the post saying he was looking forward to meeting the new pope. "It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Who is Pope Leo XIV?

Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV is 69 years old and born in Chicago Illinois. He started his ecclesiastical career in Peru and spent many years in the country. As an Agustinian friar, he graduated from Villanova University in 1977.

His appointment as pope comes as a huge milestone in history as the first American to hold the papacy.
