This statement came following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the conflict that has persisted for three years.
Trump, through his platform Truth Social, affirmed that both countries will not only seek a cessation of hostilities but also the definitive end of the war. "Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly, the END of the war," he said, adding that the "tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent."
Phone conversation between Trump and Putin
Early Monday morning, a U.S. official reported that a phone call was taking place between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump with the purpose of negotiating a ceasefire in Ukraine. Additionally, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the communication aimed to find a solution to the conflict.
This comes three days after the Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams met for the first time in three years in Istanbul. Although a ceasefire was not achieved, other agreements were established, including a possible meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners.
