Louisiana State Police recapture Corey Boyd, Five Orleans Parish fugitives remain on the run
A high-stakes manhunt unfolds after a bold escape from New Orleans Prison, leaving five dangerous fugitives at large. The incident has sparked outrage, political blame, and urgent calls for reform.

Eleven inmates, including second degree murder and attempted second degree murder suspect Corey Boyd, escaped the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans, on May 16, 2025. The escape took place, early in the morning, when a maintenance worker allowed the inmates to crawl through a hole behind the toilet and climb a fence with razor wire on top when he momentarily left the facility. The escape caused concerns regarding jail security and possible collusion between inmates and employees. "We own this mistake", Sheriff Susan Hutson acknowledged during a press conference shortly afterward.
As of May 20, five of the ten inmates are still on the run. Louisiana State Police have recaptured Corey Boyd, Gary C. Price, Kendell Myers, Robert Moody, and Dkenan Dennis. Boyd was caught in the 1400 block of Iberville Street in Treme. Price was found in an abandoned home on Good Drive. Myers was discovered lying under a car. Moody and Dennis were also discovered in both neighborhoods.

The fugitives remaining at large include Antoine Massey, Leo Tate, Derrick Groves, Robert Moody, and Gary Price. A $20,000 reward is being offered for tips that lead to the capture of the fugitives. The FBI and U.S. Marshals have joined the manhunt and are utilizing facial recognition software or better surveillance. The break-out has raised scrutiny of the Orleans Parish jail and its operations and management.
Governor Jeff Landry condemned the escape as the result of 'progressive' criminal justice policies, and also promised to hold 'accountable' anyone who helped the fugitives escape. He ordered an audit of the facility and directed the removal of state prisoners. The breach raised questions not only about jail conditions and staffing but also the efficacy of policies at local and state levels. Lawmakers and community leaders have applauded discussions regarding reforms that could help prevent breaches like this in the future.

The escape has also raised questions about the possibility of jail staff involvement. Three staff members have been suspended, and an investigation is underway to determine if there was possibly any internal help. The escape took advantage of known problems, such as faulty locks and insufficient maintenance. Sheriff Hutson stressed the need for more funding and resources to upgrade these facilities.

As the manhunt continues, authorities are asking the public to be aware and also to report any sightings of the escapees. Residents are advised not to approach any suspects, and to contact law enforcement immediately. The escape has drawn attention to weaknesses in the justice system and the challenges faced by jail staff in caring for high-risk inmates. There has already been a good faith effort made to bolster security on jail facilities and improve staff safety to prevent repeat episodes.
