Power outage leaves 100,000+ without electricity in New Orleans
Power outage leaves tens of thousands in the dark across Southeast Louisiana as Entergy implements emergency rolling blackouts to stabilize the grid amid sweltering heat and soaring demand.

More than 100,000 customers lost power Sunday afternoon, according to Entergy’s outage map. More than one hundred two thousand customers lost power at the peak time. The outage began around 4:30 PM that impacted once again most of the Eastbank of New Orleans, Metairie, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parish.
Entergy confirmed that there was a “load shed” due to the fact the power grid was close to its capacity. While the grid authority managed the outage protocols of Entergy, because of the impending conditions, they made a determination to discontinue some areas of the grid until the grid was stabilized enough to keep it intact. Space is being assessed to be able to give an estimated time to have all customers restored to power.
MISO order causes rolling outages as entergy works to restore power safely
According to a representative for Entergy New Orleans, the MISO load-shed order affected approximately 52,000 customers. Restoration is in process; however, Entergy assures that safety first, and future MISO instruction determines how quickly restoration can occur. Additional updates will be given pending MISO's final instruction.
Rolling outages began due to MISO's emergency order to prevent a large-scale blackout because of limited power generation supply in the state. Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans decided to implement a rolling outage, as a preventative measure, in order to keep the electrical grid stable. In addition to this being a vital response in reducing stress on the electrical system, this also will help maintain the integrity of the electrical infrastructure.
Over 100K without power across Southeast Louisiana as entergy warns of more outages
Entergy has warned customers they may experience multiple outages until the situation improves. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through Entergy’s app, official website, and local news. Restoration timelines are uncertain and depend on real-time grid performance.
The power outages by parish as reported are:
- Orleans Parish: 34,647 without power (peak: 52,268)
- Jefferson Parish: 35,780 without power (peak: 36,204)
- St. Bernard Parish: 6,800 without power
- Plaquemines Parish: 6,511 without power (peak: 6,535)
- St. Tammany Parish: 23,345 without power
- Washington Parish: 804 without power
Entergy continues to monitor the grid and respond to the MISO-mandated load-shedding order. Restoration efforts remain underway, but customers are urged to stay informed and prepared as additional outages may occur depending on grid stability.
Generator failure and high demand trigger New Orleans power outage, raising grid concerns
The power outage occurred due to a combination of factors, according to Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis, whose district includes the New Orleans area. One Entergy generator was offline for routine maintenance when a second generator, which supplies the region, failed unexpectedly. Lewis was uncertain whether the second generator belonged to Entergy or Cleco. Simultaneously, energy demand exceeded forecasts.
Interestingly, the temperatures on Sunday were well below peak summer levels, raising concerns about the reliability of the area’s power grid as summer and hurricane season approach. This has led to questions about whether the current infrastructure can handle future spikes in demand under more extreme conditions.
Power outage hits over 100,000 customers in Southeast Louisiana; full restoration by 8 p.m.
At the peak of the outage, approximately 52,000 Entergy customers in Orleans Parish lost power. This included the entire Lakeview neighborhood and parts of Canal Industrial, Gentilly, Mid-City, and Uptown. Jefferson Parish experienced outages affecting around 35,800 customers, while St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes had roughly 6,000 and 6,500 customers without power, respectively.
Additionally, customers served by Cleco in the northern coastal area were impacted, as reported by Commissioner Lewis. The electrical supply was fully restored across the metropolitan area by 8 p.m. the same day, bringing relief to tens of thousands of residents and businesses affected by the outage.
