Why is Flag Day celebrated?
Flag Day remembers June 14, of 1777, when the Continental Congress first established the first composition of the American flag. "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of 13 stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."
Nonetheless, almost 100 years later, a city north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin called Waubeka would be the first one to ever celebrate Flag Day, in the late 1800s by Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher. President Woodrow Wilson would later issue a proclamation declaring June 14 as Flag Day in 1916; and President Harry S. Truman, in 1949, signed the formal declaration which established the date as a holiday.
How is Flag Day celebrated?
After that first celebration, and the intervention of 2 U.S. presidents, the country has honored the American flag, in many different ways. While parades are always a hit; ceremonies, and essay contests, are often organized by veterans groups, schools, and civic organizations.
However, Flag Day is not a federal holiday, which means mail and government services will still be available. Only Pennsylvania, recognizes Flag Day as a state holiday, allowing residents a respite from work and school.
