"It's the culmination of everything in life you've ever dreamed of," Benn expressed in anticipation of the March 17 celebrations. For Benn, a proud son of Limerick, Ireland, the honor feels like "hitting the lotto"

Michael Benn: Irish tradition and community

Benn’s connection to St. Patrick’s Day runs deep, starting from his childhood in Limerick, Ireland, where he first embraced the holiday. Moving to New York in the 1960s, Benn, along with his wife Christina, both of Irish descent, made the city their home. Their shared roots in Limerick and the city’s vibrant Irish community would shape Benn’s life, both personally and professionally.

In addition to being a dedicated family man, Benn has long been a community leader. He has served as president of the Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade for over 38 years, a position that has seen him organize the local parade and promote Irish culture through the community-focused television show “AN Suil Na Gael TV.”

From Queens to the biggest parade in the world

Although Benn has played a major role in the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a cherished tradition in Queens, he never imagined he would one day be the Grand Marshal of New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. His hard work and commitment to local charities, along with his dedication to Irish heritage, earned him this special honor.

“This year’s parade will kick off at Father Duffy Square in Times Square for the first time,” Benn revealed. The event will be marked by a performance from Seo Linn, an Irish folk group led by Benn’s nephew-in-law.

Michael Benn:  A family affair

For Benn, the day will be extra special, with 40 family members, including his six children and 11 grandchildren, marching alongside him. His extended family from Ireland, including 16 councillors from Limerick, will also attend to celebrate his achievement.

Before the parade, Benn plans to attend the traditional pre-parade Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a highlight for him every year. “You enter St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and you get goosebumps,” Benn shared. This year, as Grand Marshal, he will walk into the cathedral in a moment of great pride.

Celebrating with Irish traditions

Benn’s celebration begins early with an Irish breakfast at the Pig ‘N Whistle, where he’ll enjoy sausages, mashed potatoes, and traditional Irish pudding. By afternoon, it’s time for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, where the streets of New York will be flooded with celebrants.

And of course, as the day winds down, Benn jokes that a Guinness or Jameson will likely be involved, keeping the Irish spirit alive throughout the festivities.
