As Easter draws near, so does one of the most anticipated celestial events of the year—the Paschal Moon. This full moon marks the beginning of spring and plays a crucial role in determining when Easter will fall. But what makes this moon so special, and when can you expect to see it?

Also known as the Pink Moon, this full moon is more than just a bright light in the sky. It has deep cultural significance and a connection to the vibrant spring blooms in the Northern Hemisphere. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming Pink Moon and how it ties into this year’s Easter celebrations.

What is the Pink Moon?

Though it’s often referred to as the “Pink Moon,” the moon will not actually appear pink. Instead, it will shine the usual bright white.

The name comes from an early spring wildflower called Phlox subulata, also known as creeping phlox or moss phlox, which blooms around the time of April’s full Moon. This flower, sometimes referred to as "moss pink," is what gives the Pink Moon its name, though it’s more of a cultural symbol than a literal description of the moon’s appearance.

The Pink Moon is one of the twelve full moons that appear each year, and its name is linked to the blooming of these vibrant flowers in the Northern Hemisphere’s spring season, rather than any change in the moon's actual color.
