Mother's Day is upon us and, as many countries do, the United States celebrates this holiday the second Sunday of May. However, Mexico is one of the few countries where they celebrate Mother's Day in a different date.
But why is it always celebrated on this particular day? The story behind Mexico’s Mother's Day is rooted in cultural, religious, and historical significance.
Mother's Day in Mexico: Why May 10th?
The history of Mother's Day in Mexico dates back to the early 1920s. The date was chosen originally due to religious reasons, as it coincides with the celebration of Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.
However, the first Mother's Day in Mexico goes way back. In Oaxaca, in 1913, the wife of a Methodist priest discovered an article on Mother's Day and decided to introduce the celebration in her community. That's how Mexico became the first country in Latin America to celebrate the holiday.
How does Mexico celebrate Mother's Day?
Mother's Day goes beyond any kind of gifts, it celebrates the continuous efforts of mother who try to do their best for their families. The recognition was cemented since 1922 when the official Mother’s Day celebration took place on May 10th.
The Secretary of Public Education, José Vasconcelos and journalist Rafael Alducín, founder of the "Excelsor" newspaper; launched a campaign in the front page to ask the government to establish a day dedicated to mothers: “with the purpose of exalting in life or in memory those who gave us life.”
