FDA recalled canned beans across 23 states in the U.S.

Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans are being recalled in several U.S. states due to a potentially dangerous undeclared allergen.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on May 2 that the Vietti Food Group, based in Nashville, is recalling 4,515 cases of the baked beans due to the presence of undeclared soy, which can pose a life-threatening risk to individuals with soy allergies.

According to the FDA's press release, "Individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product."

The recalled beans are sold in 15-ounce cans with a best-by date of February 17, 2028. They were available at retailers including Walmart, Associated Wholesale Grocers, K-VA-T Food Stores, Hy-Vee, and Meijer prior to the recall.

The recall affects consumers in the following states: Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

Soy can cause allergy reactions in people

Soy, a major allergen, is commonly found in food products and can cause mild stomach discomfort like constipation, bloating, and nausea. It can also trigger allergic reactions, such as rashes, itching, and breathing difficulties, in some individuals.

Food Allergy Research and Education reports that soy allergy is most common among infants and young children, with around 0.4% of U.S. infants altered. Additionally, soy is considered “possibly unsafe” for children allergic to cow's milk when used as a substitute.

The FDA has confirmed that, as of the recall, no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported. Consumers who purchased the affected product are advised to return it for a full refund.

This recall follows a March incident where nearly 200,000 cans of Good & Gather Cut Green Beans were pulled from shelves due to potential foreign object contamination.
