Health Risks from plastic contamination prompt large recall of Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt
FDA recall yanks over 50,000 gallons of popular frozen desserts after plastic shards discovered — what you need to know to stay safe.

Wells Enterprises Inc. has issued a nationwide recall of approximately 22 ice cream and frozen yogurt products after detecting hard plastic fragments in some batches. This contamination poses serious health risks including mouth injuries, dental damage, and choking hazards, making it crucial for consumers to take immediate action. Around 18,000 containers, sold in 3-gallon tubs with expiration dates from March to October 2026, are affected.
The most impacted product is the Vanilla Frozen Yogurt, with over 5,000 tubs recalled due to potential plastic shards. Consuming these contaminated products could result in painful cuts inside the mouth, broken teeth, or dangerous choking incidents, particularly for children or vulnerable individuals. Consumers are strongly advised to avoid eating these items and to return or safely discard any affected products.

Wells Enterprises has contacted more than 100 food service locations, including restaurants and cafeterias, to remove the recalled items from their inventories. Although no injuries have been reported so far, the FDA has classified this as a Class II recall, signaling that while serious harm is unlikely, temporary or reversible health effects may occur.
This recall is part of a broader effort by the FDA to protect consumers amid a series of recent product safety concerns. The agency urges consumers to check product codes and expiration dates on the FDA website and to stay alert for any health symptoms after consuming recalled products.

Consumers play a vital role in food safety by staying informed and checking the products they bring into their homes. While recalls can seem routine, the presence of physical contaminants like hard plastic makes this situation especially urgent. By inspecting labels, verifying batch numbers, and spreading the word to others—especially those who may not follow FDA updates—people can help reduce the risk of injury and ensure that potentially hazardous items are quickly removed from circulation.
If anyone experiences pain, discomfort, or other symptoms after consuming these ice creams or yogurts, immediate medical attention is recommended. Awareness and caution are key to preventing avoidable injuries caused by hidden plastic contamination in frozen desserts.
