Gloria Montenegro, former Minister of Peru, dies at age 69
The former minister of Peru and former mayor of Trujillo, Gloria Montenegro, died today at the age of 69. She was Minister of Women's Affairs during the government of Martín Vizcarra.

The Peruvian former minister and former mayor of Trujillo, Gloria Montenegro, died today, May 21, at the age of 69. Montenegro served as Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations during Martin Vizcarra's administration. She was part of the congressmen elected in 2016 until their dissolution in 2020. Montenegro passed away after a neurosurgical procedure, as it was reported by his son.
During her political career, Montenegro was an opponent of Keiko Fujimori or Dina Boluarte's politics. She declared that, although she would like a woman president, she would not want her to have the profile of them. During one of his last interactions, he posted a message on his X account, in favor of the prime minister's departure: “He resigned before facing censorship. His departure comes after the massacre of 13 miners in Pataz, the crime wave and a president with 2% approval rating”, she posted.

The death of Gloria Montenegro has brought reactions from political associated figures on Peru. Ana Jara, who is also a former Minister of Women, expressed her sorrow at Montenegro's departure and sent her condolences to her family.
Juliana Oxenford and Rosa Maria Palacios, Peruvian journalists, also commented on Montenegro'“ death. "A woman who bought several lawsuits to seek justice for the most vulnerable” said Oxenford on her X account. “She was a decent politician who sought to improve the lives of the women she served as a minister and all those she represented as a congresswoman” said Palacios.

José Toledo Montenegro, son of the former minister, posted a message before the confirmation of the death of his“mother: "My mother Gloria Montenegro suffered a very serious complication during a neurosurgical procedure she recently underwent. Unfortunately, this complication has resulted in a diagnosis of brain death, confirmed by the medical team that attended her. (…) We ask for your understanding and privacy while we make decisions as a family, together with her husband Juan Elias, about the next steps”
Montenegro was part of Cesar Acuña's Alianza para el Progreso during 2004 until 2019. After leaving the party, he joined the ranks of Partido Morado; a political organization in which he would be between 2020 and 2022, during the intern administration of Francisco Sagasti. Finally, he belonged to Primero La Gente, her stay in this party was between 2023 and 2024.
