Peruvian President Dina Boluarte plans to request Congress authorization for U.S. visit: "I will attend"
Peruvian President Dina Boluarte announced plans to request congressional approval for an official visit to the United States, following an invitation from U.S. Vice President JD Vance.

A new international trip is on the agenda. On Monday, May 26, President Dina Boluarte announced that she will request authorization from the Congress of the Republic to make an official visit to the United States. During her speech at the inauguration of the International Conference of the Americas Society/Council of the Americas (AS/COA), the president expressed optimism about the invitation from the U.S. Vice President and hoped that Congress will grant the permission.
“I take this opportunity to deeply thank the Vice President of the United States, James David Vance, for his honorable invitation to visit his country. I will attend and trust that Congress will prioritize the national interest, as this opportunity will strengthen the strategic ties between our nations,” she said in her speech.

Boluarte described the visit to the U.S. as a “historic opportunity” for Peru, as it will advance a common agenda on bilateral cooperation. “This visit will represent a historic opportunity to advance a shared agenda,” she emphasized.
The head of state also explained that Vice President Vance extended the invitation during a recent meeting in Europe. They both met on Sunday, May 18, in Italy, where they attended the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV. It was during this meeting that the dialogue took place which led to the proposal of this official visit to the country led by Donald Trump, a trip now pending approval from the Congress of the Republic.

Foreign Minister Elmer Schialer had announced last week the official invitation extended to the president by U.S. Vice President James David Vance. Speaking at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office, he explained, “through diplomatic channels, this invitation will be carried out,” he said.
Schialer also revealed that President Boluarte, as a gesture of reciprocity, invited both Vice President Vance and President Donald Trump to visit Peru. He mentioned that the wife of the U.S. Vice President expressed enthusiasm for the country, as during a previous visit she was “amazed” by Peru’s cultural and natural wealth.
