Starting May 7, 2025, a Real ID will be required for domestic flights in the U.S. Learn about costs, requirements, and how to obtain one in New York before the deadline.

Starting May 7, 2025, all travellers boarding domestic flights in the United States must present an identification that meets federal security standards, known as the Real ID. This measure, implemented by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), aims to enhance security in transportation and federal facilities. In New York, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has been issuing these identifications since 2017, making it crucial for residents to understand the costs, requirements and procedures to obtain one before the deadline.

What is the Real ID and why is it necessary?
The Real ID is a driver’s license or identification card that meets federal standards established by the Real ID Act of 2005. As of May 7, 2025, it will be required to:
- Board domestic commercial flights.
- Enter secure federal facilities, such as government buildings and military bases.
Without a Real ID, residents will need to present a passport or another approved form of identification for these activities.
Obtaining a Real ID in New York doesn't involve an additional fee beyond the standard DMV transaction costs. The costs vary based on the applicant’s age and the document’s validity:
- For individuals under 62 years old:
- If the next birthday is within the next six months (valid for 4 years): $9.50.
- If the next birthday is more than six months away (valid for 4 years): $10.00.
- If the next birthday is within the next six months (valid for 8 years): $12.50.
- For individuals 62 years or older:
- If the next birthday is within the next six months (valid for 4 years): $6.00.
- If the next birthday is more than six months away (valid for 4 years): $6.50.
- If the next birthday is within the next six months (valid for 8 years): $8.00.
These fees are subject to change based on state regulations, so applicants should check with the New York DMV for the most updated information.
How to apply for a Real ID in New York?
To obtain a Real ID, applicants must visit a DMV office in person and present the following documents:
- Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. passport or birth certificate).
- Social Security Number (SSN card or W-2 form).
- Two proofs of New York residency (utility bill, lease, or bank statement).
- Proof of lawful status in the U.S. (if applicable).
The DMV doesn't accept photocopies; all documents must be original or certified copies. After submitting the required documents and paying the applicable fee, the Real ID will be mailed to the applicant within two weeks.
With the May 7, 2025 deadline approaching, residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to avoid last-minute delays. Although it is not mandatory to have a Real ID, travellers who don't obtain one will need a valid passport or other federally approved identification to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities.
