Traveling to the United States and exploring by car can be a convenient way to see the country, but foreign visitors must follow specific driving requirements to stay compliant with U.S. laws. While some states allow tourists to drive with an international license, others require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which must be obtained before arrival. Additionally, those renting a car in the U.S. may face age restrictions and additional documentation requirements.

Understanding these rules and regulations can help travelers avoid legal issues or fines. Certain states, including Arizona, California, Texas, and Nevada, have stricter requirements, and rental companies like Enterprise recommend that tourists with non-English licenses obtain an IDP. Whether you're renting a vehicle or using your own, knowing the necessary documentation will ensure a smooth and stress-free driving experience in the U.S.

What happens if you are pulled over with a Foreign License?

Even if you don’t plan to rent a car, having an IDP can be helpful when driving in the U.S.. According to USA.gov, not all states require tourists to have an IDP, but it’s important to check state laws before your trip.

If you are pulled over in a state that requires an IDP for foreign drivers, you may face legal issues, which could negatively impact your trip. To avoid complications, ensure you have the necessary documentation before hitting the road.

What is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

The Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic established agreements allowing countries to recognize foreign driver’s licenses.

An IDP is issued by the same country that grants the original driver’s license, and cannot be obtained in the U.S. by foreign license holders. The International Drivers Association, which helps distribute these permits, has guides and videos on how to apply in countries like Germany and Indonesia.

How to rent a car and the requirements for tourists

Rental companies have varied policies regarding IDPs. Enterprise, for example, does not require all tourists to present an IDP, but recommends it for those whose licenses are not in English. If the license is written in Japanese, Arabic, Russian, or other non-English scripts, an IDP is mandatory.

Additionally, travelers heading to Arizona, California, Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, and Colorado may need to provide extra valid government-issued documentation, according to Enterprise.
