Obtaining a driver’s license is a crucial step toward becoming part of the community and gaining access to job opportunities. In the United States, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is responsible for issuing the necessary documents for new drivers.

However, some Americans living abroad have been asking if there is a possible to obtain or renew a driver's license while outside the country. Find out all the details in the following report.

Can I renew my U.S. driver’s license while living abroad?

The short answer is no. However, if you are outside the U.S. and have lost your driver's license, users will need to contact the Department of Motors Vehicles in the State their driver's license was issued.

If you intend to rent or drive a vehicle in another country with a U.S. driver’s license, you will need to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your license. In most cases, the IDP must be secured in the U.S. before traveling abroad.

How to renew an expired Driver’s License

Every state has its own time frame for license renewal, and if you fail to renew it within the designated period, you may be required to apply for a new license instead.

Since license renewal rules vary by state, here are the general steps most drivers need to follow:

  1. Check your state’s DMV website – Find out what identification documents are required and whether you can submit an application online. Even if an online application isn’t available, many states allow you to schedule an appointment to save time at the DMV.
  2. Request an extension if necessary – If you’re on military duty or traveling abroad for government business, you may qualify for a license extension to prevent it from expiring while you’re away.
  3. Visit the DMV in person – Bring all required documents, an accepted payment method, and if you wear glasses, don’t forget to bring them for the vision test.
  4. Receive your new license – Depending on your state, you may get your license immediately or receive it by mail. If mailed, the DMV will provide a temporary license until your official one arrives.
