As May nears, Social Security recipients are preparing for another set of payments. There are Social Security recipients for many Americans, but they could be unsure if their payments are on time because it depends on what type of benefit they receive. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is paid out differently than others for elderly or limited resources and for individuals with disabilities.

For SSI recipients, May will be a different month, as it will include a weird double payment for June! We'll break down just about everything you need to know about payments coming up in May, what to expect from your SSI check and a new payment schedule.

When will SSI payments be made in May 2025?

For May 2025, SSI payments will be distributed on the following dates, including an unusual double payment for June:

  • Thursday, May 1: SSI payments.
  • Friday, May 2: Retirement benefits for recipients who began receiving checks before May 1997, as well as retirees who also receive SSI.
  • Wednesday, May 14: Retirement, survivor, and spousal benefits for those born between the 1st and 10th of the month.
  • Wednesday, May 21: Benefits for those born between the 11th and 20th of the month.
  • Wednesday, May 28: Benefits for those born between the 21st and 31st of the month.
  • Friday, May 30: SSI payments for June, which marks an additional double payment for SSI beneficiaries.

Typically, SSI recipients are paid once a month on the 1st. However, when the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are made on the last business day before the month begins, resulting in the possibility of two SSI payments within a single month.

The maximum monthly payment for those starting their benefits at full retirement age (67) is $4,018. However, claiming benefits early at age 62 lowers the maximum to $2,831, and delaying retirement until age 70 can increase the monthly benefit to $5,108. These amounts represent the maximum possible payments, with actual benefits depending on a person’s lifetime earnings and the number of years they have contributed to Social Security taxes. In January 2025, the average monthly retirement benefit was $1,976.

For SSI, the maximum monthly payment in 2025 is $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples. However, the actual amount may vary based on eligibility factors such as income and living conditions.
