With the May 7 deadline for REAL ID enforcement getting closer, many Americans are scrambling to obtain the identification needed for air travel and accessing federal buildings. The 2005 REAL ID Act requires all state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards be secured and subject to minimum security standards. Federal agencies cannot accept an ID issued by the states that do not comply, and an individual without a REAL ID will have travel and access restrictions.

REAL ID are issued by states, the District of Columbia, and five major U.S. territories, which means the application processes may vary. As time approaches, it is important to understand how to get a REAL ID, and which documents are required to meet the new requirement.

Can I apply for a REAL ID Online?

The option to apply for a REAL ID online varies by the state of issue.

For example, Pennsylvania allows prequalified residents to apply for a REAL ID online. Other states, such as California, New York, and Virginia, allow online applications with an in-person component afterward.

Officials in some states, including Texas, Michigan, and Oklahoma, require you to do the entire process in person.

What documents do I need for a REAL ID?

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), travelers must provide the following documents to obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or ID:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Two proofs of residence at their primary address
  • Proof of lawful status

"States may have additional requirements, so be sure to check your state’s driver’s licensing agency website for further guidance before your visit," the DHS advises.

How long it will take to get my REAL ID?

The time it takes to receive a REAL ID depends on the issuing state.

"If you need a REAL ID before an upcoming trip, make sure to apply early enough to receive your physical card by mail," Tennessee’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security advises. "A paper credential may not be accepted by TSA."

Can I travel without a REAL ID?

Even after the deadline, travelers can still use other acceptable forms of identification, such as passports or a state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License, for domestic travel.
