Although Miami's idyllic weather, thriving culture, and lack of state income tax provide plenty of appeal, the living costs Miami presents is well above the national average and is a challenge for most Miamians. People generally need to earn more than one hundred thousand dollars to be able to live comfortably in Miami.

Rent for a living space is around $2,650 per month. In addition, factors such as food and transportation raise the cost of living in Miami. As for entertainment, there are affordable and free places to go; however, it's important to know how to manage your money to survive in the Magic City.

Housing costs in Miami

The Miami real estate market is one of the costliest in Florida. For most residents that earn $2,650 monthly in rent, if they want to avoid paying an out-of-pocket cost of more than 30% of their monthly income, the estimated annual salary needed is $106,000. Like other cost-prohibitive urban markets, many residents have taken on roommates or partners to share these high costs.

While there are less expensive neighborhoods in Miami, they often come with a trade-off, such as a longer commuter time. Affordable areas like Coconut Grove, Kendall, and Little Havana have the potential for rents between $1,600 to $2,650 monthly and offer new residents the chance to search for more budget-friendly space.

Considering the high costs in Miami, it is estimated that a person must earn at least $100,000 to live comfortably. Photo: SmartAsset

Tips to manage Miami’s cost of living

Planning is the first step to surviving in Miami. If you are moving here, and you want to find a place to live, you can work with a real estate agent; property managers usually cover the commissions), which can save you money. If your expenses would be more manageable with the help of a roommate or your partner by sharing your costs, go ahead and do this.

You can also save on living expenses shopping at places like Aldi or Costco. I recommend checking out what types of free arts and culture programs are available. When it comes time to commute, I recommend using public transportation, or a bike rather than owning a car. These are all options to consider to make living in Miami doable despite its higher cost of living.
