Jet Set tragedy has left Dominican Republic mourning for three days

In response to the recent tragedy in Santo Domingo, President Luis Abidaner has signed a decree extending the national mourning period to six says for the victims of the Jet Set nightclub collapse, where 221 people lost their lives during a merengue concert.

According to official document No. 194-25, Article 1 extends the period of national mourning until April 13. Article 2 states that the Dominican flag will be flown at half-staff at public and military institutions through that date as a sign of respect for the families affected by what is being called the worst civil tragedy in decades.

Meanwhile, the nation bid farewell to singer Rubby Pérez—one of the recognized victims—during an emotional memorial attended by major figures from the music industry and conducted with presidential honors. Families, friends, and fellow athletes also held tributes for former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco.

General Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), confirmed that rescue teams had saved 189 survivors in what he described as the most complex operation of his career.

Preliminary investigations suggest that structural failures at the 50-year-old venue were likely to blame. Residents in the area had reportedly raised concerns about the building’s condition multiple times prior to the incident.
