From 101 wins to fired: Orioles stun MLB with Brandon Hyde dismissal
Following a disappointing start and a 10½-game deficit in the AL East, the Orioles part ways with Brandon Hyde and name Tony Mansolino interim manager.

The Baltimore Orioles announced Saturday that they have fired manager Brandon Hyde after a 15–28 start to the 2025 MLB season. The move comes as the team sits 10½ games behind the division-leading New York Yankees, falling far short of expectations after back-to-back postseason appearances in 2023 and 2024. Third-base coach Tony Mansolino has been named interim manager, and field coordinator Tim Cossins was also let go.
Hyde, who took over in 2019 during the team's rebuild, led the Orioles through a dramatic turnaround, including a 101-win campaign in 2023. However, Baltimore has regressed in all areas this season, with a struggling offense, one of the league’s worst pitching staffs, and inconsistent defense contributing to a rocky start.

Injuries and offseason moves fail to deliver
Despite increased offseason spending under new owner David Rubenstein, key signings have underperformed or suffered injuries. Tyler O’Neill, Charlie Morton, Gary Sanchez, and Andrew Kittredge have contributed little, while the loss of ace Corbin Burnes in free agency left a major void in the rotation. The Orioles currently have a 5.33 ERA—worst in the American League and third-worst in MLB.
The offense has also struggled beyond core contributors like Gunnar Henderson, Cedric Mullins, and Ryan O'Hearn. Injuries to infielder Jordan Westburg and outfielder Colton Cowser have tested the team’s depth, while top prospects such as Heston Kjerstad and Coby Mayo have yet to make a major impact.
A leadership change amid high expectations
General Manager Mike Elias said the decision was necessary to “set a different course for the future,” despite acknowledging Hyde’s role in the team’s recent resurgence. Elias had offered a public vote of confidence earlier this month, but the Orioles responded by losing 10 of their next 13 games, including the last four.
Players expressed surprise and disappointment over the move. “That’s unfortunate because Brandon Hyde is a great guy,” said outfielder Ramón Laureano. “We, as players, have got to play better.” Rookie pitcher Cade Povich echoed those sentiments, saying the decision caught many off guard. Mansolino, who has prior managing experience in the minor leagues and has been with the Orioles since 2021, will take over managerial duties on an interim basis.
