Waffle Recall Update: FDA issues highest risk level for contaminated products
The FDA has set the highest risk level for a recent waffle recall due to potential contamination

On Thursday, the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the recall of Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix as a Class I danger, the agency's highest risk level. The recall affects 2-pound cartons of the product, which were manufactured by The Quaker Oats Company, a subsidiary of Frito-Lay, Inc. This classification indicates a serious risk to consumer health and safety.
The initial recall was voluntarily issued by Quaker Oats on January 14, prompted by concerns that the product may contain undeclared milk, a serious allergen for some individuals. The contamination poses a risk of severe allergic reactions, particularly for those with milk allergies, making it crucial for consumers to check their purchases and follow the necessary safety steps.
Why is it a Class I recall?
The FDA states that a Class I recall is issued when there is a "reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will result in serious adverse health consequences or death."

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 2 to 3 percent of children under the age of 3 have a milk allergy. While around 80 percent outgrow the allergy by the age of 16, some individuals experience it for life. For those with a milk allergy, consuming milk can trigger anaphylaxis, a rare and potentially life-threatening reaction that can impair breathing and cause the body to go into shock.
