In a bold move by Mexican internet users, the iconic "Mall of America" in Minnesota has been temporarily renamed "Mall of México" on Google Maps. This action is a response to recent events, reflecting the pride of the Mexican community in the United States after Google changed "The Gulf of Mexico" to "The Gulf of America" after president Donald Trump asked them to.

The change quickly gained attention, with many social media users celebrating this digital act, showcasing their cultural influence and sense of unity. While Google has already changed the name of the mall back, it has not yet changed "The Gulf of America" back to "The Gulf of Mexico".

Why "The Mall of America"?

According to Minneapolis' official webpage, "The Mall of America" first opened its doors in 1992 and features over 520 stores, 60 restaurants, the 7-acre indoor amusement park Nickelodeon Universe, SEA LIFE Aquarium, a comedy club, top-tier gaming and entertainment centers, the LEGO Store, mini-golf, and a wide range of family-friendly attractions and nightlife options.

It is the biggest in the Western Hemisphere and the twelfth largest mall globally.

A controversial renaming

In January 2025, President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14172, officially renaming the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America." This move aimed to assert U.S. sovereignty over the region.

The renaming has sparked international controversy. Mexico, which shares the Gulf, has expressed strong opposition, arguing that the U.S. lacks the authority to unilaterally rename a body of water recognized globally as the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico is now threatening to sue Google over the appearance of this change on Google Maps.

While the name change is official within the United States, its international recognition remains uncertain. Countries and organizations are not obligated to adopt the new name, leading to a complex situation where the Gulf is known by different names depending on the region.
