A petition launched by a Canadian lawmaker to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship has gathered nearly 171,000 signatures since it was introduced on February 20, 2024. The petition accuses Musk of engaging in activities that go against Canada’s national interests, fueling debate over his influence in global politics.

The campaign, led by Charlie Angus, a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP), claims that Musk has used his wealth and power to interfere in Canadian elections and is now aligned with a foreign government seeking to undermine Canada’s sovereignty.

Why is Canada seeking to revoke Musk’s citizenship?

According to the petition’s statement, Musk has allegedly used his financial and political influence to meddle in Canadian affairs, which has sparked concerns about his loyalty and role in global politics.

"We, the undersigned citizens of Canada, request that the Prime Minister immediately revoke Elon Musk’s dual citizenship and his Canadian passport," the petition states.

The campaign is set to close on June 20, 2024, and will then be submitted to the Canadian government for review.

Is Elon Musk Canadian?

Although Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, he obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Saskatchewan, Canada. His Canadian passport has allowed him to study, work, and build his fortune in North America, ultimately leading to his rise as one of the world’s richest and most influential figures.

Despite his Canadian ties, Musk’s actions in U.S. politics and his alignment with foreign governments have raised concerns among Canadian lawmakers and citizens, leading to the push for his citizenship revocation.

Elon Musk’s alliance with Donald Trump

One of the petition’s key arguments is Musk’s close association with Donald Trump. The billionaire CEO of X (formerly Twitter), Tesla, and SpaceX has become one of Trump’s most influential allies, publicly supporting his economic and foreign policy strategies.

Musk has also voiced support for controversial ideas, including Trump’s suggestion of annexing Canada through economic influence—a statement that has alarmed Canadian politicians and citizens alike.

As public debate intensifies, it remains to be seen whether the Canadian government will take steps to review Musk’s citizenship status or if the petition will serve as a symbolic stance against his political involvement.

While revoking citizenship from a high-profile billionaire like Elon Musk would be unprecedented, the petition reflects growing concerns over his political influence and Canada’s national interests.
