Andrew Cuomo for President? Speculation grows among Democrats about White House run
Cuomo has not officially entered the New York City mayoral race, but he already has the endorsement of some Democrats to run for President.

Andrew Cuomo, former New York major, is rumored to be in the final stages of launching his campaign, CNN reports. Cuomo has been spotted recently amid speculation regarding his mayoral race. Before his announcement, some members of the Democratic Party are supporting him as a possible contender for the 2028 Presidential Elections.
Since Kamala Harris lost the 2024 Elections past November, Democrats have been anxious trying to find a new voice who can lead them. The profile is someone who can stand up against President Trump and the aggressive approach to his politics that he has reassured during the first month of his second term. In this sense, Cuomo rises as an alternative.

Democrats see Cuomo as a possible House candidate
Relevant figures, such as Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons and Democratic strategist Basil Smikle have said that the current landscape needs someone like Cuomo, who is ''not afraid of standing up for people.'' His ability to communicate with the public was also praised. Cuomo, with his direct, in-your-face style, they argue, could become a dark horse candidate in what is expected to be a wide-open race.
This week, even before jumping into the mayoral race, Cuomo was endorsed by Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.), who told the New York Post that the former governor “has the courage to stand up to extremist politics — both from the far left and right.” Despite this approval, people online have mixed opinions about Cuomo's possible candidature, as his previous scandals have tainted him.
Could Andre Cuomo run for President?
Theoretically, Cuomo could run for president, but several factors make it unlikely. His resignation in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations significantly damaged his reputation and political viability. While he was not criminally charged, the scandal led to bipartisan condemnation, making it difficult for him to regain widespread support.
Even if Cuomo decided to run, he would face challenges in securing funding, endorsements, and voter trust. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic initially boosted his national profile, as he confronted Trump during the height of the lockdown, when both men lobbed frequent barbs at each other. However, later controversies—such as the handling of nursing home death data—undermined his credibility.
