Babylon (2022)
Audiences were initially uncertain about Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, a film set nearly a century ago during Hollywood's golden age. Margot Robbie stars as the aspiring actress Nellie LaRoy, while Brad Pitt plays the seasoned actor Jack Conrad. Yet, a significant part of the story is driven by Diego Calva’s character, Manny Torres, a determined young man eager to climb the ranks of the industry.
While Manny’s ambition is strong, it is nothing compared to Nellie’s, who is determined to live the star-studded life, indulging in excesses of drugs and alcohol. As the film industry shifts from silent films to sound, Nellie appears to have found her way to stardom, while Jack struggles to salvage his career. However, in this Hollywood tale, not everyone ends up with a happy ending.
Notes on a Scandal (2006)
In Notes on a Scandal, Judi Dench delivers one of her most complex performances as Barbara Covett, a lonely teacher who lacks close friends or the ability to experience reciprocal love. This isolation might explain why Barbara becomes so captivated by the school’s new instructor, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett), who is married to the much older Richard (Bill Nighy).
When Barbara learns that Sheba is involved in an affair with one of the school’s underage students, Steve Connolly (Andrew Simpson), she urges her to end it immediately. However, Barbara has her own plans. She intends to use the information to her advantage and is willing to manipulate Sheba’s life to achieve the outcome she desires.
The Gutter (2022)
If you're familiar with the Farrelly brothers' peak comedic style in films like Kingpin, Dumb and Dumber, and There’s Something About Mary, you'll recognize the outrageous humor in The Gutter. Brothers Isaiah and Yassir Lester embrace the silliest comedic moments, often to hilarious effect.
Shameik Moore, known for his role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, plays Walt, a down-on-his-luck guy who finally finds a sense of belonging with the outcasts at a local bowling alley. When a building inspector (Adam Brody) threatens to close the alley, another regular, Skunk (D’Arcy Carden), steps up to coach Walt as he taps into his surprising bowling talent and enters competitive tournaments. In a nod to Kingpin, Susan Sarandon takes on the role of Linda Curson, a fierce bowler who stands between Walt, Skunk, and their dream of victory.
