The College of Cardinals convened the first General Congregation following the death of Pope Francis. Approximately sixty cardinals gathered in the Synod Hall at 9:00 AM for a session that lasted about ninety minutes. The meeting commenced with prayers for the late pontiff, reflecting on his twelve-year papacy and his contributions to the Church.

During the session, the cardinals took an oath to uphold the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, which governs the procedures during a papal vacancy and the election of a new pope. They also sang the hymn "Adsumus," invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit in their deliberations. The gathering emphasized the solemnity and significance of the tasks ahead.

A key outcome of the congregation was the decision to transfer Pope Francis's body to St. Peter's Basilica on Wednesday, allowing the faithful to pay their respects. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, with numerous world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, expected to attend. These arrangements mark the beginning of the official mourning period for the global Catholic community.

The cardinals also discussed preliminary matters related to the forthcoming conclave, which is anticipated to commence between May 5 and 10. This period allows for reflection and informal discussions among the cardinals regarding potential successors. The conclave will adhere to established protocols to ensure a smooth transition of papal authority.

The diverse composition of the College of Cardinals, representing various regions and perspectives within the Church, suggests a dynamic and potentially lengthy conclave. Observers note the absence of a clear frontrunner, indicating that the selection of the next pope will involve careful deliberation. The process underscores the Church's commitment to unity and continuity amidst diversity.

As the Church navigates this period of transition, the faithful worldwide are encouraged to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the election of a new pope. The upcoming conclave represents a pivotal moment for the Catholic Church, with the potential to shape its direction for years to come. Further updates will be provided as events unfold.
