Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. This historic event marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. Prevost, aged 69, was born in Chicago and holds dual citizenship with Peru, reflecting his extensive missionary work in South America. His election was confirmed after white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the conclusion of the conclave.

In his inaugural address from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Leo XIV began with the words, “Peace be with you,” setting a tone of unity and hope. He emphasized the importance of building bridges through dialogue and encounter, urging the faithful to come together as one people in peace. The new pope paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, acknowledging his blessings and expressing a commitment to continue his legacy.
