Elon Musk criticizes Trump’s tax and spending bill, saying it will raise the deficit and hurt government efficiency.

Elon Musk is once again in the public eye as he has publically criticized U.S. president Donald Trump's "Big, Beautiful" tax bill, calling the situation "disappointing". This would mark a break of the 2 of them since the tech billionaire help Trump win the re-election in 2024.
Musk, warned the administration that the bill championed by Trump, and which narrowly passed in the U.S. House of Representatives; would only increase the deficit instead of decreasing it. According to the SpaceX owner, this would undermine all the "improvements" he made at the head of DOGE.

While Elon Musk donated more than $250m for Trump's campaign, and was the head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency; it looks like his recent step back from the office has marked the end of their agreement.
Until April, DOGE's official website claims to have saved around $175bn by cancelling contracts and reducing the government workforce; the figure lacks evidence to support it. However, he states that the multi-trillion-dollar tax breaks the bill approves, could raise the deficit by approximately $600 billion next fiscal year.
Musk criticizes the "Big, Beautiful" bill
Musk states that a bill can be big or beautiful, but "I don't know if it can be both." This also highlighted the tensions within the Republican Party, which became clear when different wings of the party almost prevented the bill from pasing.
While he does not regret the decisions he made while he was leading DOGE, saying "it had to be done", he plans to do "a lot less" political spending in the future, as his focus is on the Tesla company.
