Xbox unveils ROG Ally handhelds with AMD power, native Xbox app, and up to 1TB storage
Xbox and Asus reveal ROG Ally devices with Ryzen chips, Xbox integration, and launch planned for holiday 2025.

At the Xbox Games Showcase in the summer of 2025, Xbox unveiled a collaboration with Asus to create two new handheld gaming devices: the ROG Xbox Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally X. Both portable gaming devices are meant to connect Xbox players who want to play games on the go using upgraded AMD processors and a built-in Xbox app, giving players access to their entire Xbox library, including cloud gaming.
The most premium console, the Xbox ROG Ally X, has an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme GPU, 24GB of RAM, and 1TB onboard, while the standard ROG Xbox Ally has an AMD Ryzen 2A chip, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. Both Xbox ROG Ally handhelds are slated for release in time for the 2025 holiday season but have yet to announce pricing details.
Native Xbox app and expanded ecosystem access
The devices will include a native Xbox app, allowing users to quickly switch between games and services like Discord, Battle.net, and PC stores. Xbox noted that its ROG Ally consoles are designed to bring together experiences across all platforms, giving users access to their Xbox digital ecosystems, something a traditional console couldn't do.
These advancements represent Xbox's plan to position its biggest games, like Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, in spaces like PlayStation 5. Similarly, the Xbox PC app is starting to include video game titles that were previously unavailable on consoles, making it a fully integrated gaming platform.

Design features and confirmation of earlier leaks
Previous leaks on FCC filings showed a black device labeled as a handheld device from Xbox, almost like the final version. Xbox's official announcement seemed to clarify that there will be additional performance enhancements, added comfort with a redesign of the hand grips, and impulse triggers that were first introduced with the Xbox One, which allowed for variable haptic feedback during gameplay.
The ROG Xbox Ally, with the combination of power, portability with console-level power and the ability to access the larger ecosystem, looks positioned to enter the growing handheld gaming market and provides the opportunity for gamers to enjoy Xbox titles when they are away from their home console.
