As in February of this year, immigrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Honduras and Haiti who have Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Humanitarian Parole, will face limitations to receive permanent residency through a green card. Hundreds of people are now worried about their current immigration status in the US.

On January 20th, President Trump issued an executive order instructing the secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) to terminate parole programs, including those for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans. Those who were relying on these programs will have to explore other legal options to stay in the US, as they could potentially get deported once their TPS expires. This action has made it difficult for immigrants who are applying for a Green Card, which allows permanent residency in the country. Access to the permanent resident card includes social benefits such as healthcare.

Why migrants from 4 countries won't get Green Cards in 2025?

The US Homeland Security Department has informed that immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela will face new restrictions to receive green cards in 2025. This will directly affect those under TPS and Humanitarian Parole, both created to protect people from crisis-stricken countries.

The Temporary Protected Status, for example, allows immigrants to live and work legally in the US, but it does not guarantee permanent residency. Similarly, Humanitarian Parole, implanted in 2022 offered temporary protection against deportation for two years, but it did not guarantee a direct path to getting a green card. With the removal of this program, thousands of immigrants will have to explore other migratory alternatives.

What options do Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan immigrants have?

Regarding these recent restrictions imposed by the DHS, immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela are now forced to explore different alternatives to avoid getting deported under the Trump administration.

  • The Cuban Adjustment Act: Some Cuban citizens can opt for his benefit which promises work authorization and, after one year's presence in the US, the right of permanent residency to any Cuban arriving in the United States legally or illegally.
  • Searching for other legal pathways: Family programs, Asylum applications or Worker visas can be viable options in certain cases.

However, Nicaraguan citizens will face greater issues, since Humanitarian Parole was one of the few alternatives available for them.
