With Mother's Day right around the corner, many people are trying to think of ways to creatively and inexpensively celebrate the day without going over their budget. While spending is expected to reach a staggering $34 billion on this day alone, you don't have to feel obligated to purchase an extravagant gift.

There are ways to express your appreciation that include thoughtful and meaningful acts of replacement that can leave a lasting impression. If you're on a tight budget, let me share some ideas to help you celebrate Mother's Day, without blowing your budget.

How to celebrate Mother's Day if you are on a budget?

Nikki Jones, a single mom and founder of the lifestyle blog San Diego Moms, describes her life as "beautiful chaos" and finds joy in balancing her work and raising her nine-year-old, despite the daily challenges.

“I think parenting in today's world definitely provides some more challenges, but it’s a lot of fun,” Jones said to ABC News.

For those who wish to celebrate without overspending, Jones offers several cost-effective activities:

Made with love

Jones recommends instead of spending money on an expensive card, you should make one yourself. This will make the act of writing a personal card feel more meaningful by creating a beautifully handcrafted card.

Some simple ways to show how much you love your partner include; making breakfast and serving it in bed, filling a jar with little pieces of paper containing special memories, having a movie night (but use your partner's favorite/most watched movie) as well as some popcorn.

Plan ahead

Jones suggests it is never good to plan at the last minute to buy a card or gift. When you plan in advance, it allows you to look for sales and compare prices, plus gives you time to really consider what you want to buy/who you are buying for.

Also, the closer you get to the actual gift giving day, the less likely you will find any sort of discounts or special promotions.

Look for sales and discounts

Also, she advises you to always look out for sales, and also sign up for store newsletters so you will have access to any special or promotional vouchers early.

Set on a budget

Before you start shopping, Jones recommends setting a budget for the card as well as the gift. If there is a set price limit, it may prevent you from wanting to add something to your cart at the last minute.

Also, it will keep your spending in check, since the thought you put into the gift far outweighs the cost.

Shop local

While there will be a multitude of choices while shopping online, it is important to remember to shop local. Jones points out that small stores, craft markets, and second-hand stores contain unique gifts and even affordable gifts that are equally meaningful as gifts from brand-name stores. Also, you are supporting small businesses in the process.
