What are the new consumer protection laws in California?
The new "Assembly Bill 2863" is designed to help customers manage subscriptions. After July 1, 2025, businesses will be required to obtain affirmative consent to renew a paid subscription. Currently, this is not necessary, as the existing law states that a subscription or purchase agreement continues until the consumer cancels the service.
The law will apply to subscription that begin or are extended on or after July 2025.
What sellers need to know about California’s retail theft law?
Senate Bill 1144, first introduced by Nancy Skinner, a former state senator and now California Energy Commissioner, aims to reduce the amount of stolen goods on online marketplaces. This new legislation will require websites, like eBay and Facebook Marketplace, to provide more information on high-volume third-party sellers.
At the same time, the law also requires a due process for shoppers to notify the marketplace about stolen goods and to alert law enforcement about third-party sellers attempting to sell or selling stolen goods.
