What does Donald Trump’s Signature say about his personality?

According to graphologists consulted by various international media outlets, the U.S. president's signature reveals his ego, his desire for omnipotence, and a belligerent attitude.

After announcing the controversial withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement with Iran, President Donald Trump repeated a gesture that has become almost his signature move: he raised the book showing the resolution and his signature, which is long and pointed, always in black ink.

Since Trump’s arrival at the White House in January 2017, several international media outlets have discussed what his signature reveals about the personality of the real estate mogul who, against all odds, became the President of the United States.

Graphologist analyse Donald Trump's Signature

On Wednesday, the French newspaper Le Figaro revisited Trump's signature and consulted graphologists to analyse the stroke. "Donald Trump's signature is always the same. It is very architectural and represents this man’s personality well," explained graphologist Myriam Surville, co-author of an article in the specialized journal La graphologie in April 2017, where she analysed that signature along with other handwritten documents by Donald Trump.

"Although we don't know this man personally, it quickly becomes clear that he is someone with an inflated ego, a desire for omnipotence and omnipresence, which seems to be the cornerstone of his personality," stated Myriam Surville to Le Figaro.

His long signature, with irregular strokes, also shows an immense energy, which "can even reach brutality," explained Jaime Martínez, a graduate of the Institute of Psychographic Techniques of the Spanish Society of Graphology, to El Periódico in Catalonia last year. It reveals a continuous self-affirmation, an "exaggerated" sense of himself, and a "belligerent" attitude, always ready for confrontation, "to attack and defend, though perhaps more to defend, as seen in the castle-like shape at the ends of his signature."

It also reflects a marked ambivalence that enables him to live in multiple worlds simultaneously. "He experiences both the world of ideas and the material and pleasurable aspects of life with equal intensity, assertion, and ferocity. His whole life is an exercise of iron will to do whatever he wants," Martínez added.

Meanwhile, Maria Dolors Mora, vice president of the Consultative Grafoanalysts Group of Spain, and Lin Pérez-Calvo, a psychologist and expert in handwriting analysis, pointed out in the Catalan newspaper that Trump's signature reveals "traits of a 'critical father' personality, who, in order to feel good, believes he needs others to be wrong so he can assert himself over them, correcting, pointing out, overseeing, and commanding."

Though the experts warn that it is risky to draw conclusions about someone's personality based only on their signature without knowing them, they emphasize that in Trump’s case, "the continuity of the graphic movement is tense, almost strained, with a total dominance of angles, which speaks of a highly reactive personality, shrewd, predisposed to fight, and driven by controversy. The only premise he conceives is to win, and he regenerates, feeds off, and grows in the face of opposition and criticism."

Sheila Lowe, an American handwriting analyst, noted in an article for CNN in Spanish that the signature of the White House chief has the "quality of a barbed wire fence" and added, "There’s nothing friendly or open about this signature. The great height of the capital letters, combined with the extremely angular design of the letters, shows a person who is impressed by their own power."
